INCLUSIVITY - GROWTH - COMMUNITY
UMMTA, The University of Melbourne Music Theatre Association, is a student-run theatre company that operates out of the University of Melbourne. UMMTA provides opportunities for performers, designers, creatives, and writers to participate in full-length existing musicals, new musical theatre works, and learning opportunities. Through these projects, UMMTA aims to give its members the opportunity to grow and develop in a safe, inclusive, and fun theatre context.
UMMTA’s ambition is to foster a fun and inclusive community with all types of backgrounds. We encourage everyone to get involved with our productions and programme of events, regardless of musical theatre experience and familiarity.

'The Sitzprobe' is presenting 6 short musical pieces this year! Every year, UMMTA gathers a passionate and enthusiastic team of writers, creatives, designers, performers, and more to develop new original musical theatre works. The projects can be anything from an excerpt of a full musical to a collection of songs with a basic story. ‘The Sitzprobe’ provides writers/composers the opportunity to trial their works in a creative environment and fosters their development by getting their ideas on stage. 4th to 6th May, 2023 at the Union Theatre, Arts and Cultural Building |
UMMTA's 2023 mainstage show is Spamalot!
UMMTA's mainstage shows give student theatre makers the chance to work on a seemingly professional production while still being supported by peers, mentors, and Union House Theatre. Students are able to learn new skills and get things wrong in a safe space, providing them with ample experience in their role in a theatre production. UMMTA's mainstage shows are also a great jumping-off point for going into independent theatre, as evidenced by the fact that many UMMTA alumni have landed roles in bigger theatre companies after being involved in our shows. 14th to 16th September, 2023 at the Union Theatre, Arts and Cultural Building |
Charlie's Cultish Christmas is going to Fringe! We can't wait to show you a longer version of our sixth Sitzprobe 2023 show.
UMMTA takes one Sitzprobe show to the Melbourne Fringe Festival each year, which gives a writer the opportunity to develop their work further and see it come to life on stage once again. With the support of a full production team and cast, UMMTA nurtures original student-written musical theatre and encourages new theatre writers to put their work out there. Going to Fringe with UMMTA is also a great way to get to know people outside of university theatre and work in a more professional type of space. 4th to 8th October, 2023 at the Festival Hub: Trades Hall - Solidarity Hall |
